What is Holistic Health

WHO Defines health as, "A state of complete physical, mental and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmary."

Health is a unity of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

With the exception of inborn genetic defects, a person's health is not primarily predetermined by his/her genes. The genetic code we received from our parents may 'predispose' us to certain conditions, however the environment in which our cells live exerts a very powerful influence. It has been estimated that only 2% of diseases are solely transmitted genetically. The other 98% of diseases actually develop because of environmental influences. This environment is made up of factors including diet, nutrients, hormone balance, toxins, lifestyle choices, our beliefs (and lifestyle practices based on those beliefs), perceptions and mental states. Environments can turn genes on or off.  This means we are not a victim of our genes. Ideally we would like the healthy genes turned on and the disease causing genes turned off.

This affirms that, "Even though my parents and grandparents had 'xyz' disease, I can still exert 'significant' control and prevent a disease from arising in my body."

Our well-being depends on a number of factors including physical health, emotional support, mental stimulation, spiritual nourishment, and more. Therefore, in order to feel at our very best we need a complete approach that meets our needs in all of these areas.

This is the principle that our practice is based upon.

Holistic health emphasises this connection of mind, body, and spirit. The practice of holistic medicine integrates conventional and complementary therapies to promote optimal health and to prevent and treat disease. The goal is to achieve maximum well-being, where everything is functioning at the highest level possible.

Holistic health is a lifestyle choice. It doesn't stop and start when patient walks in and out of a practitioner's office. What a patient does on a daily basis to tend to their mind, body and spirit is as important as any treatment or remedies they may receive. This concept of holistic health encourages people to accept responsibility for their own level of well-being, and their everyday choices that affect their health.

Principles of Holistic Medicine:

  • The whole person is made up of inter-dependent parts and if one part is not working properly, all the other parts will be affected. In this way, if people have imbalances (physical, emotional, or spiritual) in their lives, it can negatively affect their overall health. In practical terms, we see that many patients who come in seeking to alleviate one symptom are often pleasantly surprised to find that many other symptoms have also improved.

  • The patient is a person, not a disease: Holistic health considers the whole person and how he/she interacts with his/her environment rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body.

  • All people have innate healing powers: We are natural born healers unless conditions persist that perpetuate the 'dis-ease'. This means that unless we address the underlying cause(s), the disease will persist. This also means that with the right approach we can halt the progression of a disease or even reverse it, and eliminate symptoms.

  • Holistic Healing takes a team approach with the aim to return to health of mind/body/spirit. This involves the patient, doctor, and other practitioners. It addresses all aspects of a person's life including diet, exercise, environment, attitude and behaviour modifications, relationship and spiritual counselling, etc. This may be achieved by using a variety of health care practices, non-invasive remedies and improving the flow of a person's life-force energy. The goal is remove the conditions that perpetuate the disease and enhance the body's own ability to heal itself.

At Thirroul Holistic Medical Centre, it is our policy to work together with your specialists or other natural health practitioners who may be involved in your care. Our aim is to address the cause behind your health challenges, not primarily focusing on 'symptom complexes' or medical diagnoses. These changes that occur through shifting diet and lifestyle may take some time to have an effect. Medication may need to be continued until real healing has started to occur. The body’s natural speed of healing is often gradual, therefore patience and perseverance is needed. We are here to support you on this journey.

Our body tells a story for those who are willing to listen, and here are Thirroul Holistic Medical Centre, we do listen.

Our goal at Thirroul Holistic Medical Centre is for you to become the healthiest and most energised that you can be.
